Your step-by-step moving guide

A Month Before The Move

1. Reserve Your Moving Company Early

As soon as you know you're moving, book your moving company. Transport MC can even help pack up your house or business!

2. Start Decluttering

There’s no sense paying a mover to move items you no longer need. Begin cleaning out closets, the garage, and attic. Host a garage sale or donate your unwanted things. After the sale, Transport MC offers full junk removal services!

3. Notify Important Organizations

Update your change of address with charge accounts, insurance companies, clubs, and other relevant organizations. If possible, gather the owner's manuals for appliances in your new home or office.

One to Two Weeks Before The Move

1. Create a "Survival Closet"

Pack up a survival closet with items you’ll need for the final clean-up, plus snacks for the last day.

2. Pack an Overnight Bag

Make sure you have everything you'll need for the first night in your new home. Keep your overnight bag separate from the rest of your items.

3. Prepare a "Do Not Pack or Move" Area

Keep essential items clearly marked and set aside. These are the things you’ll need immediate access to once you arrive at your new place.

4. Create a Floor Plan

Plan where your belongings will go in your new space. This helps save time, reduces confusion for your movers, and even saves you money!

5. Make Parking Arrangements

If your driveway is unavailable, ensure there's a clear, accessible spot for the moving truck. If needed, contact your borough office to reserve parking. The truck needs space equivalent to about three parking spots.

6. Label Boxes

If you’re packing yourself, make sure every box is clearly labeled with its destination room on the top and sides.

7. Schedule Service Disconnects

Schedule disconnections for utilities like gas, electric, and water at your old place, and make sure connections are set up for your new home.

The Day Before the Move

1. Double-Check the "Do Not Pack or Move" Area
Things will move fast once we arrive, so double-check that your essential items are properly labeled and set aside.

2. Remove Hand Railings and Doors
If large items like furniture or appliances won’t fit through doors, remove hand railings or doors before we arrive. If you’re unsure how to disassemble anything, don’t worry—we’ll handle it for you at no additional charge (other than the time and materials needed).

3. Defrost the Refrigerator
Clean, defrost, and dry your fridge to ensure it’s ready for the move.

4. Prepare Cash for Move Day
Have enough cash on hand for any immediate needs and tips for the movers (at your discretion).

5. Say Goodbye to Your Neighbors!
Take a moment to say farewell to neighbors, friends, and colleagues.
